I happened to pass by Tawyeen lake in Fujairah many times and during each season. It’s always green and brings a refreshing view to your eyes, especially during hot summer weather. It’s a lovely place for paddle-boarding, camping or just a simple picnic location in the shadow of the evergreen trees.
DISCOVERED BY ACCIDENT
I was planning a drive to the top of Jebel Yibir that day. Sadly, I was stopped at the bottom of the mountain by the army patrol and informed that it was not allowed to go further. Nothing happens by accident – I thought – instead, I discovered two new amazing places nearby. One I already wrote about in this post: HIDDEN OASIS UNDER RED MOUNTAIN and the other one was the Tawyeen lake.
This region is one of the less discovered regions of the United Arab Emirates and also less visited by people from outside. The mountains nearby are being exploited by crusher’s companies. Therefore, I think, people unknowingly do not get closer assuming there is nothing interesting around.
LAKE THAT DOESN’T DRY UP
The Tawyeen lake(25°33’56.5″N 56°03’24.4″E) is actually a lake that depends, solely on the rainfall. Although I have never seen it dry in any season it rises its level after rainfall significantly, to the point, that the main roads around are completely submerged in water and you have to look for a way back around the mountains.
The lake exists due to Tawyeen dam that was created in order to collect the water in its reservoir. That helps to increase groundwater reserves.
You will not need 4×4 car to get there, however if you decide to drive closer to the water, mind the mud that looks dry but it actually is wet underneath. It might be a little bit noisy and dusty at times, because of previously mentioned quarries working non-stop and the big trucks transporting material passing by.
