Jebel Al Faya (altitude 168 m above the sea level) – also known as Real Jeepers Mountain is truly an off-road driver’s dream. Trailhead leading to the highest point is a perfect mix of top-grade topography and spectacular desert scenery.
I came across this trail years ago, passing by. When I found out Jebel Al Faya was a popular paragliding location, I was intrigued to see the view from the top. So, I headed on a hike that did not leave me disappointed.
That day, just before the sand storm, the weather was sensational. You can watch a short clip from that trip at the end of this article.
Since then, I have visited the area around Jebel Al Faya many times. Whether it was for desert off-roading trips (5 Things You Should Know About Fossil Rock, Top 4 Ultimate Beginner Off-Road Desert Trails in the UAE), visiting the museum, trekking and exploring expeditions – I always ignored the thought of taking the trail to the top by my car. Probably because I saw many photos of vehicles that tripped or rolled over in that particular place. Finally I decided to overcome my fear.
IT’S CALLED REAL JEEPERS MOUNTAIN FOR A REASON
Real Jeepers Mountain is located in the neighborhood of old rock quarry in Mleiha (25.093229, 55.827384), right in the middle of the desert of Al Faya. The trail is rather largely untraveled and unexposed due to the fact that it requires an off-road car with high ground clearance and a bit of technical off-road skills (and potentially right recovery equipment) to go through it. Driving off the beaten path can be fun but if you are not prepared, it might unnerve you pretty fast.
As soon as the tires touch dirt, deflate the tires, shift into 4WD Low Range and lock the center differential (if available). To avoid being surprised by a severe or potentially dangerous section of the trail, especially at the beginning, I would recommend you to first get out of your car and get an idea of how to tackle the section by section.
Opening of the trail consists of deep ruts with steep sides and uneven rocky ground. It is recommended to have another person watching you from the front as you drive and correcting, if necessary. When you finish the first stretch, the rest of the road is rather fine, with just a few tricky sections. Going down seems easy, except just one small section.
CAMPING AT THE TOP OF JEBEL AL FAYA
The drive up is thrilling and the views once you reach the final destination are breathtaking. The full view of both sunset and sunrise, with a vast open surrounding space of the desert truly make you feel like you are standing at the top of the world.
You will find a large flat surface at summit, providing a suitable place for camping. Keep in mind that it might be windy at times.
ANCIENT HISTORY BURIED UNDER THE SAND
Considering the exceptional surrounding of the nature of Jebel Al Faya, it is no surprise that it was discovered to have a great archaeological importance. Remains of Paleolithic settlements dating back 125,000 years were found in this area. The Mleiha Archeological Center located nearby now brings history alive in all its facets. Moreover, if you fancy discovering the ancient times outdoors, you can head on a short hiking trip between the mountains in Valley of the Caves that is located on the other side of Jebel Al Faya. Apart from archeological subject, few kilometers away you will also have a chance to take a geological voyage 93 millions years back in Buhais Geological Park (25.020471, 55.799480)
REMEMBER:
- Do not leave any garbage behind, including food. Even organic waste can take months to biodegrade and meanwhile it will attract animals. It may not only make them stop eating their natural food and rely on what humans leave behind but also it may make them sick. Additionally, have always a bag ready to collect trash left behind by other inconsiderate people – at the end you are saving the nature.
- Hike or camp over gravel and rocks. In some areas the vegetation can take years to grow back.
- Leave natural and historical items where you find them. Don’t move them or bring them home with you.
- Minimize cooking over campfire, use the stove instead – as less impact on the wilderness.
